This past Friday, August 16th and Saturday the 17th, our Council held the semiannual Tootsie Roll Drive outside the Bayside Lakes Publix. It was a big success. Our members collected over $1200 for the Intellectually handicapped. Thanks to all who spent time distributing tootsie rolls and collecting donations. Special thanks to Ron Gento our campaign chair Knight.
The new Officers for Council year 2019-2020 were formally installed this past Saturday, July 27, during the Officer’s Installation Ceremony, which took place at 1:00 PM in Our Lady of Grace church. Our Council Chaplain, Father Emmanuel Akalue, was present to bless the ceremony and Officer Medals. Worthy District Deputy Doug Blair Officiated the ceremony assisted by Worthy District Warden Bob Burgess.
Our Lady of Grace Council 13243 in Palm Bay conducted a baby bottle drive to support Pregnancy Resources Inc., a support center for expectant mothers in Melbourne. Over one weekend at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, members passed out bottles to be filled with change and donations and returned to the church on Mother’s Day (Sunday mass). Thanks to the generosity of churchgoers, the council donated more than $3,800 to the center.
March 16 Knights and family members played kickball with residents of Promise in Brevard and Special Olympic athletes at the Space Coast Field of Dreams. It was a great time even though it rained most of the day. At the pizza party following the game we presented $1000.00 checks to Promise in Brevard, Space Coast Field of Dreams, Space Coast Early Intervention Center and Special Olympics Brevard County.
Brother Knights cooked and served spaghetti dinners to the students of Florida Institute of Technology. We do this @ 3 to 4 times a year. A great community service our council performs.
On Tuesday, February 19 a representative from Habitat for Humanity gave a presentation on what Habitat does and how we can volunteer for a build or in the main facility.
On Jan. 19, the 5 councils of District 30 joined together in a fund raiser to support a local Pregnancy Resource Center and to also begin raising money to purchase an Ultrasound machine. We had 4 speakers: Paul Gloekler, the Florida State council Pro-Life Event Director; Linda Evans the director of the Pregnancy Resource Center in Melbourne; District Deputy Doug Blair, and District Warden Bob Burgess. The event was hosted by Fr. Martin Power Council at Ascension Catholic School Cafetorium. The food was great and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
At our council business meeting Dec. 4, the Worthy District Deputy Doug Blair and his Worthy Warden Bob Burgess presented Past Grand Knight Mark Stephenson the Star Council Award for council year 2017-2018. Star Council is always a prestigious award and one the council should be proud of. This is our 2nd year in a row receiving such an honor.
Our 4th Annual Pumpkin Patch turned out to be our best ever. We received 2,657 pumpins. After two weeks of selling we sold a total of $15,057 dollars worth of pumpkins. The council realized @ $5,000 as a result. The Hayride was a huge attraction as well as the photo op we provided. Thanks to all the brother Knights who volunteered time and talent to make this event the success it was.
Council members Steve Kremer, Steve Drake, Mark Stephenson, Tom Duffy, and Larry Davis represented OLOG council 13243 at the 2018 Life Chain. We were accompanied by Chris ( Ed Schmitt’s daughter) and Kayte Campbell from OLOG parish.
